Zhao Zintong won the snooker this evening, beating Higgins in the final. he is 28 years old and is already World Champion.

Very good but closer to home Stephen Hendry was only 21 when he won. If Wiki is to be believed he won it seven times in all. Six times when he was younger than 28.

In ten years time the game will be dominated by the Chinese. There are hardly any snooker halls now, especially compared to the boom years of the eighties. Living in east London at the time I had seven or eight within easy distance, all bar one has closed. That's why the top British players are nearly all in their forties or fifties, there is no new talent coming through.

In 10 years time, no-one will care, its become very boring. Blame Barry hearn.

Would that be the same Barry Hearn who was responsible for the Snooker boom in the eighties?

Yes the very same,

Past performance is no guarantee of future results

Check out what he has done, and been involved with since.

So how would you make it more popular?

Nothing, Its had its time.

It's found it's level. It was never going to maintain the high it reached in the eighties, but it is holding it's own.

Like many “sports” it was elevated well beyond its roots. No longer the cue, table and pint of times past, but a TV sofa fest dominated by £££££.

A bit like darts which I found unutterably tedious - far less engaging than snooker. The latter has tactics and many variables. Darts - 3 pointy things to throw at an 18” disc.

I was playing snooker on the full size tables at the RAC Club, Pall Mall yesterday (as you do!). Thankfully I managed to beat my son.

The RAC Club always has a 'rather special' car on display in the entrance hall. Yesterday it was a 1956 Mercedes Benz 300 Cabriolet with the same engine as the legendary 300 Gull Wing. Only 49 of these cabriolets were made and this example was still owned by the original buyer, after 70 years! Just 49,000 miles on the clock, it was gorgeous, and probably priceless.

Talking of darts, this shows fairly impressive throwing of three pointy things at a 0.5" disc, to win the game!!
