Interesting article, this kinda raised its head (to me anyway) about a year ago and it was only then I discovered the independent chain of vets we had used for the last 10 years was now actually owned by Mars.

Indeed, its becoming a bit of a stitchup, if vets chains are not owned by pet food mfrs, the other lot are owned by insurance chains.

Have much vets bill experience, having wracked up £18k bills in the last 5 years with the youngster. happily I have only paid £3k in insurance premiums, and only forked out about 1k in excess.

I am lucky, I have a chain of 6 vets, independently owned, but have leased/share their primary surgery with a big chain - Vets now. That means the main surgery is amazingly equiped, with a large x-ray and CT scanner suite. ( I know from experience that a k9 ct scan starts at £5k)

It means I get good well priced local care, and access to specialist/out of hours care.

But why does that scan start at £5k - just because they can?

We paid for SWMBO to have a private CT scan (to move things along quicker), that was less than £500.

Thats a 1 body part CT scan, full body with contrast is about £1500 with screening (which these days is AI)
Ok considerably less than a vetinary one (same kit) I could get 3 new breed goldie pups for that*

Why do they cost so much? little more involved with an animal, they need to be heavily sedated, but because they can charge that, they do. And people pay it.

*was in the vet once, and a young boy comes out with his hamster, receptionist says" that willl be £25 please". I muttered under my breath that I could buy a box of them for that price.

Much the same seems to happens when human healthcare is paid for by insurance, judging by what happens in the USA.

Yep, along with credit hire companies - then they complain about the cost of credit hire and some car repair centres.

My 11 year-olde English Pointer has never been to a vet, apart from his initial jabs.

He is as strong as an Ox, and as fast as a Greyhound.

My late Rhodesian Ridgeback never went to a vet either, and he lived to be 15.

Same with me, the last time a visited a GP was in 1992.

Luck?

Pretty much. Good genes have a lot to do with it. The important thing is realising when you SHOULD see a Doctor.

Mum lived to 88 :)

Dad went at 54 - massive cerebral haemorrhage :(

I think that was more a matter of the forum realising you should see a doctor. ;-)

Reference your earlier post, I had a friendly encounter with a 12 year-old English Pointer out on my walk in the Peak District today. Very attractive and companionable dog, his owner describing the breed generally and him specifically as "as mad as a box of frogs".

I think most dogs are a bit 'Bodmin' for the first 3 or 4 years. Most if not all dogs (maybe not the Doberman - I've had one) are working dogs in one way or another, and if they aren't given something to do, they can become a bit crazy ... like us :)

Blodwen will be 10 in a couple of months and needs to be kept occupied.
Otherwise she lets us know..
