Yet another national news item about hapless motorists imprisoned for hours on a M-way; yesterday in dangerously hot conditions. I'm surprised there isn't a national outcry about this. Why wasn't traffic stopped at the previous junction, and those beyond it turned round to exit there? It's plenty wide enough. (This happens on my local narrower A14 which pretends to be a M-way). The usual police excuse that 'it's a crime scene' is just not good enough.

Where was this?
Is there a news report you can link to?

Without knowing the details.. but on the A14 between Cambridge and bury st Edmunds we have been ushered off the road and turned around. Hgv's weren't. Anecdotally it seems that different police forces deal with incidents differently.
We know only too often of the consequences of the A12 being closed near us.

It's highway agency that have the traffic management part, the police are there to investigate but not deal with tradfic.

But if the police decide it's a 'crime scene' and as a result restrict traffic from passing then Highways will not defy that.

Of course they wouldn't but the traffic management bit is managed by highways not the police.

What about off-motorway diversions, highways don't do those too do they? And who would make the decision, based on what?
I suppose you could say there should be (and probably is) plans for diversions for each motorway junction. But they must take a while to implement.
And what would those on the diversion route feel about the contents of the M25 coming past their door and delaying their journeys?
And maybe the diversion routes are simply not large enough to give meaningful relief so only to be used in absolutely extreme conditions.
As usual we really don't know or understand enough. Though again as usual it sometimes feels like a few keyboard warriors feel they could do the job better :-)

We used to have, and probably still do signed diversions for the the M1.
For example leave at J16 and follow yellow triangles.
