My neighbour has upgraded his VW van - internally fitted out with Audi dash,seats, Audi Sound system all with 2nd hand parts. His last upgrade was a 3.2 V6 petrol engine (2WD only) replacing a 2 litre diesel. The interior of the van is fully insulated, strong door locks and reserved for his push bikes - £5K - £10K bikes.
The engine is now 20 years old and time for replacement timing parts. First stop was an Audi Dealer who gave him a comprehensive list of parts and and prices - including VAT £4,320
The parts department could not give him the labour costs.
On-Line AutoDoc (IIRC) he typed in all the part numbers.
All parts needed were delivered for £210 including postage

Manufacturers have your trousers off for parts but that is a massively bigger difference than I would have guessed.
I buy service parts from Autodoc. Just bought a belt kit for touring with the BRZ, unlikely to need it but they have been known to throw the belt and as it's such an easy job to replace it it's worth carrying one when a long way from home. A tensioner, one each of the two types of idler pulley, and a belt £112 delivered.
I always buy OE quality, in this case Herth & Buss, Febi, and SKF. No idea what Subaru would have charged.
When I changed the pads on the MX-5 last year it was £75 (TRW) vs about £220 (Mazda) for front and rear with fitting hardware - and that was with Mazda parts from MX5parts who are a bit cheaper than the dealers.

The van as it is has been built up with 2nd hand parts over 5/6 years.
Apart from spray painting he has done 90+ % of the work on his own - help from friends when needed.
Parts cost has been very little - he has bought write-off Audi, VW, Skoda cars, MPV, etc & taken the bits he wanted and then sold off all the bits - windscreens, interior, body panels, alloys................... more for the parts sold than the whole accident bashed car cost!
There is no way he would spend thousands on Audi parts.
He bought a new Audi Q3 a few months ago but it seems to sit on the drive.
Uses the van, his Rav4 and his wife drives her 13 year old Corolla - all are immaculate for the age and mileage.

VAG parts pricing is... interesting.
The same exact part from a Skoda, VW, Audi and Lambo will have 4 different prices, sometimes an order of magnitude different.

The Ampera I had (Vx) shared parts but not prices with others in the Vx range - mostly Astra (well, that's what my rear brakes were). Prices were premium for the Ampera though.

Aston Martin older models use a lot of parts lifted from Ford and Jaguars , but same parts can be horrendously more expensive.

That engine was used in Golf R32's and Audi TT's (and some porkies)
So you pay premium prices for premium priced cars.
