Kelvingrove museum in Glasgow have removed the mummified remains of ancient Egyptians because the mummies did not give their consent to be there. It's a wonder nobody thought to ask them all those years ago.

TBH I would be upset if somebody dug up my grandma and put her remains on display. Depends which end of the telescope you are looking through.
I'm sure the intention of the deceased and their relatives was that they would remain interred indefinitely.

They did something similar a long time ago in one of the London museums with their display of shrunken heads - I think you could still privately view them but they just weren't on public display.

The Pitt Rivers museum in Oxford had shrunken heads too. We went there on an A level Sociology trip in 1977/8. Remember being both fascinated and slightly sickened.
Reports I can find says they were removed c2021 as part of a review and placed in storage.
Not clear whether, or if so on what conditions, they can be viewed.

It does pose interesting questions though doesn’t it. Do you have any rights over how your remains should be treated when you die or do your wishes become irrelevant once you die..
|
I keep banging on about it but I still think the YDales NP are missing a trick by not having a dedicated site for sky burials.
Somewhere North Pennines, away from more sensitive souls driving past in their cars. It would surely encourage birds of prey and a fitting end for me.
If you’re dead you’re dead and I couldn’t give a rats bottom but you have to admit it’s the ultimate recycling once you’ve shuffled off.
Unless the ‘Soylent Green’ solution comes to reality,
|
|
Why would it be a fitting end? If you believe “if you’’re dead you’re dead” why would the means of your disposal possibly matter to you or do you really believe in something more mystical?
|
A fitting end because I like to spend as much time in the outdoors as possible. Right to the end.
If some birds of prey could make use of my remains so much the better…I’ve picked up other folks discarded rubbish when out walking my entire life…maybe it’s time for Red Kites to do their bit,
otherwise it’s organ donor time if anything is of use.
I prefer the birds of prey idea…

Why not leave your body to medical science, a Hepatologist would be more-than interested in your liver.

I have sometimes wondered why it's perfectly fine (and I agree) to dig up e.g.Richard-III in Leicester, or other centuries-old burials for archaeology, while it is totally unacceptable to disturb sunken ships because they are considered a war grave ?
|
I think you will find it’s illegal to disturb a designated war grave on land or at sea,
Here is an interesting fact. Once someone dies they no longer own that body and a body cannot legally be the property ofvanyone else. You cannot steal a corpse

Get the principle but without Lammermuirs or similar what happens to bones.

It would be a literal boneyard.
Great place to dispose of a body illegally.
Perhaps it would be better to sleep with the fishes. But not near the salmon farms.

........though that would get you partway to fulfilling the Soylent Green thing as well.

I always tease the family that I want a mausoleum ! Sadly, our local boneyard doesn't have any.
However, a few trips on YT round Milan's Municipale and the amazing La Recoleta in Buenos Aires have made me realise that ;er indoors couldn't possibly run to the expense !
Looks like Manchester Crematorium then Only half a mile The lad's Transit will do nicely !

I think you may find they have a problem with this in India. The proliferation of diclofenac (arthritis drug) was having a detrimental effect on the birds, resulting in the corpses not being adequately consumed. The drug effectively kills the birds.
|
A. I don’t take any arthritis drugs. I’m all for drug tests on the deceased to exclude those participants.
B. Bird varieties in the N Pennines are probably different to those on the Indian Subcontinent

I think that you would be consumed mainly by Carrion Crows. That's what you traditionally got on gibbets. They go for the eyes first. Just ask a sheep farmer.
