I promised my self a nice Jaguar and went about looking at x308/x350 models. most were sold with massive miles and i wanted something that was special to me that i could keep till it was no longer needed and my wife could sell easily without any trouble.
i went to a jaguar approved used dealer and they had a nice tidy x350 model on a 2005 plate and it was very nice at 7k with 70k miles but it still didnt feel that well loved or special.
the sales men said they had a newish jaguar for sale but above my budget by a large amount but i hadnt really set a budget except it needed to feel special.
they produced a mint x351 on a 60 plate in dark maroon which tends to be a love or hate colour and with less than 30k on the clock and in LWB form with the v6 deisel engine in premium luxury spec which seems to cover all the toys you'd ever need.
they wanted 35k for it but did admit the colour may put a few buyers off so we haggled for a bit and came out at 28k which im very happy with. they said it had a few small parking marks but i didnt look to closely as they said when it was pdi'd it would be perfect so i left 4k deposit in cash which they baulked at but id forgot cash is no longer king but must pay the balance by traceable card.
ive been down this morning to check it over with a friend whos a body shop manaer and onther friend who has a rangerover specialist and all works perfectly and th test drive was nearly silent with no hint of dieasel noise unless at full acceleration.
the body was perfect with a shine ive never seen before but i did mention when i payed the deposi it needed to be perfect as i owned a valet/deailing business in the midlands and would notice any defects.
im picking it up friday now as my wife forgot to tell me shed transfered some mone money from my current account into my savings acc as id told her i wasnt getting it till monday or tuesday next week. and my friends couldnt hang around too long due to work commitments and i have bee well lately and need my hand held occasionly as i hate to be in any confrontation so if a problem occured i would still sighn the order anyway.
so thay are coming back friday for a final once over and paying for it and making sure its a smooth transaction.
sorry about a very long post but im so excited to be getting my car.

Nice one. Hope you enjoy it.

You found one - well done! Must admit the X-numbers go over my head but I take it from the 60 plate that this is the new, swoopy shape. Sounds like a lot of comfy fun - and a nice thick manual to take to bed on cold nights.
Interesting too to hear a tale of real-world negotiating. 20 percent off for being red, eh? Must remember that one!

On the contrary. I'd welcome a full post on your impressions when you've had it a week.

That was some haggle! I hope is a great delight to you!

Having never had a big, properly comfortable car, I would love to have a new shape XJ.
And if you're going to have one, may as well make it the long wheelbase - the longer the better.
Sounds as if Nick is wise to take his pals along to finalise the transaction, although I'd like to think a Jaguar dealer wouldn't try to twist a customer for such a car.

...dark maroon which tends to be a love or hate colour...
Sounds great to me. Jaguars look so dull in today's depressing palette of greys; far more appealing to have a rich, deep colour for one's chauffeur to polish outside one's club. A grey Jaguar is trying to be a BMW, and one wouldn't want that, would one?

just been over again as my friends felt a little guilty making me wait till tomorrow. i am the proud(very) owner of a premium luxury 3.0 diesel jaguar lwb x351.
i really like the burgundy as its very dark but the flake finish is stunning.
i knew the original 35k was a bit over the top but was very surprised to get it for 28k and the only stipulation was it had to be paid in full by this wednesday 8th february.
my mechanic friend went over it with the jaguar engineer for nearly an hour checking all systems. they were the personication of polite and agreeable. i must say i did play the im not well card but ive been told by others that they are very happy buying handing over large sums to this dealership.
|
Congratulations.
An absolute corking vehicle, with a delightful engine as well.

i wanted the v8 supercharged one but i borrowed a friends one for a few days while he had borrowed our boat and the power delivery was stunning but i got a bit bored of it so i tried the desiel model and was very impressed. i did look for the portfolio model but all over the top in price but i saw this one the dealer pointed out and the price was super so i could be sold with only a small ish loss.

Lovely!
My wedding car was an XJ, and I have very fond memories of the smell of leather inside grandad's old Jags (including one of the very first XJs) when I was a nipper.

|
a friend has a seies one xj fully restored and it looks superb and drives well for such a car. the leather smells lovely and my new car smells great aswell. super soft leather which is nice because some bmw and mercs i looked at had odd feeling leather that felt hard and not like real leather
|
Nice !
As for the colour, I think you are bang on. It really suits "premium" cars. Strange actually because for some reason it often doesn't work on more everyday cars.
Enjoy !

My experience of these things is sadly only of the 'runny nose up against the window' variety.
But the interior of the XJ is the best I've seen of any car, regardless of price.

Sounds like a very nice car, I really like the new Jag range and if I had £50k to spend on a new car I might really consider one.
I don't normally get excited about expensive cars apart from Aston Martins but the new Jags I do really like a lot.
I hope it gives you hassle free ownership :)

it is a gorgeous interior and the best ive ever seen and the leather feels nicer than the hide in a friends royce ghost model. im going to see him on sunday so will try and get his ghost again, blummin fastr that thing is.

I am sure the leather is wonderful. But the Nappa in my lowly Passat CC is softer and nicer than I expected (I did have test drives). But VW has used quality leather in cars costing brand new what you paid second hand.
Sounds a very nice car you have bought.

Oh, thanks Iffy. You've just made me drool all over my laptop*.
* Categorically NOT a euphemism...

just started it at -9 here on the south coast and i was expecting a bit of a bag of spanners noise on cold startup like the wifes C3 Picasso and it was just as quiet as a warm start up.
heated seats lovely but just been to fill it up with deisel (ouch)
|
I was wondering if Nick had, er, opened her up a little bit.
|
Lovely pictures, lovely car.
But am I the only one still not to 'get' the black section on the C-pillar, a sort of wrap-around continuation of the rear window? Unecessary in my view - I would have preferred the sweep of a body-coloured C-pillar.
|
|
i think that bit is the most contentious. i would like a buttress like the xj-s.
|
i went out today for a run into portsmouth along the A27 and it does pull very well and doesnt kick down all the time like lower powered auto boxes. i can confirm the windnoise is barely noticeable at higher speeds.
im going to get the use of the racetrack nearby but only when its warm enough for the ice to melt properly as i dont think the insurance would pay out if i used the racetrack:-)
