Cromer crabs used to be sold from fishermen's open front room windows, where they were displayed on tables brought up to the sill. They were sold fresh, meaning that they did not have their flavour removed by prolonged contact with a fridge, as was the case with the last ones I tried. (The same fate suffered by the wares at the formerly excellent harbourside shellfish stall at Wells.)
