Sounds like yours is the alternate system to mine, Rudedog. On the Skoda there are two satnav systems, one where the maps are just on the sd card (called Amundsen) and a more expensive one where they are copied onto an internal drive (called Columbus). I think Columbus also offers over the air updates though, if you connect yourself up and prefer that.
My Amundsen just has the maps on the card so no waiting was needed.
I have read of others doing what you need to with Columbus and asking the same question about the time, but then saying the reality was they drove to the shops for twenty minutes and it was done.
I can see on the VW site the maps are offered for different types of satnav in the same model of car, so perhaps under different names it's the same concept there.
But I have no personal experience of it, sorry.
