...And how did you cope with the situation?
I'm thinking about proper, conked out at the roadside breakdowns.
Cars are generally more reliable these days, so my story dates back to the 1980s.
I had a Cortina estate and was on my way to my brother's house for Christmas Day lunch.
Water pump started weeping.
Might not have been so bad, but this led to play in the bearing, which allowed the cooling fan to wobble just enough to slice open the top hose.
I stopped before any permanent damage was done to the engine, and was AA Relayed to my lunch by a patrolman who was glad of something to do.
Bought a new water pump either the next day or the day after, and fitted it myself with my non-mechanically minded brother handing on the tools.
The car was reluctant to restart, but only because the leaking coolant had soaked the plugs and leads.
A wipe with a dry rag and a blast down the road to warm her up and all was well.
What's your story?
